Plymouth College’s U14 Girls’ team have been crowned England Hockey Investec Girls Schools U14 Tier 2 Champions.

The team were accompanied by coaches Simon Fenwick and Emma Tremaine, and PE teacher Isobel Moore to the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. Also supporting the team was Mrs Hayward (Interim Head) and Phil Mutlow (Director of Sport), along with the girls’ families who had all made the journey up from Plymouth to cheer the team on.

The team’s first match against Wellingborough School saw them win 2-0 thanks to goals from Velvet Prowse and Izzy Campbell.

The second match of the day was against Altrincham Grammar School. The girls showed no signs of fatigue, despite the increasingly warm weather conditions, and came away with another 2-0 win, with goals scored by Kate Short and Izzy Campbell.

The third and final qualifying match resulted in a 0-0 draw against Sutton Valance School. After winning their pool, Plymouth College progressed to the final where they would face Sutton Valence again in a bid to win the national title.

The final began with Sutton Valence scoring the first goal and gaining an early lead. After plenty of support from the crowd, Plymouth College showed real grit and determination and Beth Scott scored an equalising goal. The match ended on a 1-1 draw, so it was down to penalty flicks to decide the winner. Plymouth College held their nerve and won 2-1, with goals scored by Megan Bishop and Kate Atkinson. The team’s goalkeeper, Alice Patterson, gave a fantastic performance during the shootout to ensure victory for Plymouth College.

Emma Tremaine, team coach and Head of PE at Plymouth College, said: “I’m so proud of the girls, they have worked so hard and shown super team spirit throughout this competition and thoroughly deserve to have won.”
