Plymouth College Year 7 Banana TreePlymouth College’s Year 7s have raised more than £1800 to sponsor children in Tanzania so that they can go to school.

Stephen has been supported by the money the Year 7s have raised through the Banana Tree project for the last four years.  As well as school, boarding and exam fees, donations cover costs for his uniform, school shoes and bag, text books, stationery, school breakfast and lunch.  This year there is enough money to sponsor other school children, including Ngussa.

The Year 7s have undertaken a whole range of activities to raise the money including clothes, cakes and bracelet sales; sponsored row, cycle, swim and rugby tackles; car washing; raffle; guess the sweets in a jar and tutor group Christmas calendars. Fred Grassam, Lottie Kagan and Ben Tucker were the star fund-raisers.

“The first year we started the initiative with Year 7 we raised £600 so this year’s total is three times that, which is fantastic,” said Ed Beavington, Banana Tree Project founder and Head of History and Sixth Form at Plymouth College.  “I am visiting Tanzania in April so as well as passing on the money raised I will able to meet Stephen and the other children and give them letters from the Year 7s.”

The Banana Tree Project was established in November 2006 with the aim of helping orphans and former street children in Mwanza, Tanzania to get into school.  For more information please visit www.bananatreeproject.org
