Paul Vallis, Sy Khanh Nguyen and James Douie have been offered places at the University of Cambridge. All three Plymouth College sixth formers will read engineering – Paul at King’s College, Khanh at Trinity Hall and James at Jesus College.
Paul is currently studying for A Levels in Economics and Business, Further Maths and Physics. He achieved and A* in A Level Maths when he was in Year 11. A football player and referee, Paul is the captain of the school business team that has made it through to the national final of the BASE competition.
Khahn, who is from Vietnam and a boarder at the school, is taking A Levels in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics. He has been awarded the top Physics prize in his home city. Khanh completed his gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award last year, cycling in Holland for his expedition section.
James’s A Level subjects are Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Further Maths. As well as a Cambridge place, he also has an offer from Imperial College London, which includes being awarded the very prestigious ‘President’s Scholarship’. James is a talented guitarist, currently working towards his music performance diploma, and plays hockey and cricket – James and the 1st XI cricket team had a fantastic win over the MCC earlier this week.

“Our sixth formers are given extensive support and guidance through the university application process and typically more than 90% get into their first choice. A third go to Russell Group universities and a growing number, one in four, go to universities overseas – the USA is proving to be a popular destination, particularly for those with a sports background. We have also introduced a Pre-Med programme, which offers enrichment opportunities and advice for students applying to medical school.”
