Plymouth College Year 7s have been working hard over the last three months to raise the funds to allow a boy in Tanzania to go to school. Stephen Mautula is a young teenager in Mwanza, Tanzania, who has spent time living on the streets and in orphanages.
The Year 7s linked up with The Banana Tree Project to raise the £600 needed to pay for all his school and exam fees, school uniform and shoes, school meals, stationery, books, transport and other school expenses. The children were sponsored to do a variety of fun challenges such as rowing, running, swimming, walking, cycling…and in some cases just staying quiet! Others sold toys on eBay, made and sold fantastic Candy Canes and cakes, completed triathlons, washed cars, dressed as wild animals and completed household chores.
Plymouth College Head of History and Banana Tree Project Founder, Ed Beavington, said: “The final total was an absolutely amazing £1,315 which means that not only does Stephen get supported through school this year but also another boy or girl in Tanzania will also have the same opportunity. The Year 7s have made a fantastic effort and I am really proud of what they have achieved.”
