National Poetry Day was celebrated by Year 9 with much hilarity and great rhyme at Bearwood's Poetry Slam.Bearwood College National Poetry Day Pirate Day

National Poetry Day was celebrated nationwide on Thursday 4 October and at Bearwood College, Year 9
scholars commemorated the day with a Poetry Slam. The College’s dedicated Librarian, Patricia Loch, arranged for representatives from the company “Poetry Slam” to coach the scholars and then to hold a competition in the style of a danceoff.

Topics for poems ranged from “Food” to “Dreams” to “No Clue” as scholars worked hard in their groups to come up with the edgiest, most entertaining piece of performance poetry. The trickiest part seemed to be thinking of a first line, but once the initial barrier was broken down, they moved swiftly on to compose twelve lines of rhythmic, choreographed poetry.

The afternoon saw much laughter, creativity and fun – it was a fantastic way to pay homage to our country’s great poetic tradition.

Thursday was also Pirate Day at the Prep School and Year 5 celebrated Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' as part of National Children's Book Week. Following a Treasure Island/Pirate Day theme through their assembly in the morning, the children and their teacher, Deputy Head, Marlon Moncrieffe, dressed up as pirates and took part in fun learning activities. Basing their day on the Robert Louis Stevenson classic ‘Treasure Island’, the group hunted for the booty, wrote character profiles, and designed their own pirate flags and ships.
