On Wednesday 23rd of January 7 of the Year 6 boys and girls went to the Education Village sports centre to Polam Hall Basketball championscompete in the Junior school basketball competition.

As the defending champions of the event we had a lot of pressure on to perform well and hopefully bring back the trophy to make it 2 years in a row.

We were off to a great start winning our first 2 games easily, with all players getting involved and each having their own moment of glory.

Game 3 was a lot tougher for us against St John’s, and it was proven when the game ended in a draw leaving both teams feeling happy but anxious about the final results.

We played Cockerton in the next game and lost 4-0, which is the closest any team had gotten, or would get, to them on the day.

We had to win the next game and had to do it with enough points to end in a draw with St John’s for 2nd in our Group stage. After winning by enough points we finished ahead of St John’s on points for and against, giving us a chance to play in the finals.

Unfortunately because of time constraints we did not get to play a semi-final, which would have given us the chance to play for first place had we won, so we got to play a game for 3rd place and the last medal spot.

It was a tense game against Heathfield, going basket for basket the whole way through, everyone was keeping a close eye on the score and the time and with less then 10 seconds left the ball was stuck in the middle of the
court with neither team being able to move it anywhere!

The game ended in a draw and was forced into a shoot off! Choosing a shooter was difficult, but having proved himself with shooting all day, I put my confidence in Sam.

The first shot hit the ring, bounced around a few times and then bounced out! I could hear the groans of the other players, but they were very supportive of Sam, saying he would get it next time!

The other team shot, and missed it straight under the net! I had more confidence now that Sam could win this for the team! His 2nd shot hit the backboard, bounced on the front of the ring and then bounced out again!
We could not believe how unlucky it was!

For all I could tell it should have dropped straight in! After the other team missed their 2nd shot as well, it was down to the 3rd and final shot from these 2 shooters.

Sam lined it up and took 10 seconds longer than last time to set up, he put up an amazing shot and it went
straight in! The team erupted in a cheer! However we had to wait for the other team to shoot their 3rd as well. We all stood by quietly, and he missed!

The team started cheering and celebrating! In a show of good sportsmanship they went to the other team and shook their hands.

When they received their medals it was easy to tell how happy they were and how proud of themselves they were!
