Independent school Polam Hall is celebrating achieving higher than the national average for GCSE results for its students this year.

The national average for GCSE results has fallen for the second year in a row, however, Polam Hall are bucking the trend with impressive results.

Over 390 GCSEs were taken at the school by Year 11 students. Many students were happy with their results, including Anna Chamberlain who received 10 A*s and Charlotte Elliott with 10A*s and 1 A.

Anna said: “I am really proud of my grades and got the ones I was hoping for. I am looking forward to starting college now and cannot wait to go out with my friends and celebrate later.

International student and Russian boarder Nina Bizina gained 8 A*s and 1 A – an incredible achievement in her second language having studied at Polam Hall for only two years.

Another student who has cause to celebrate today was Richard McNamara, who will be staying in Polam Hall this autumn to continue his A level studies.

He said: “I am really pleased and did better than I thought I would. I am looking forward to celebrating with a few friends later.”

Polam Hall Students also achieved impressive IGCSE results this year. Students take their IGCSE’s in English language and English literature. The pass rate for English literature was 100% and for English it was 97.8%.

The IGCSE, which stands for International GSCE, can be taken by international and independent schools across the world. In contrast to the GSCE, students who study the IGSCE only sit one major exam at the end of each course instead of ongoing continuous assessments. Both the GCSE and IGCSE counts as the same qualification and Polam Hall students sit the rest of their GCSE subjects as normal alongside their IGCSE subjects.

Our students have worked hard this year with their GCSE’s and as a result they have achieved grades above the national average. We are very impressed with them and proud of what they have accomplished “, said Headmaster John Moreland.

Polam Hall is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school which aims to unlock the full potential of every pupil, with a strong focus on excellence, service, extracurricular activities, family values and pastoral care.

It has been based at its site in Darlington since 1854 and prides itself on maintaining its traditional values and rich heritage while being able to offer pupils the strongest possible skills for the future.
