Princeton University’s Dean of Admissions will visit The Cheltenham Ladies’ College next week to advise students on higher education.

Janet Rapelye is set to give a talk on the process for applications to the prestigious US institution.
Sixth formers from the college will be given helpful hints and tips on how to gain a place during the event on Tuesday, October 9.

College US University Advisor Kathryn Buckingham said: “US applicants have been a defining feature of our Sixth Form for the past seven years.

“College has had a dedicated US adviser on site, long before going to America for university became a subject of media excitement.

“We are delighted to be able to host the likes of Princeton University here in our facilities.
“Even for those students who may not attend the US, knowing that there are different ways of being educated and that a different ethos characterises Ivy League schools from Oxbridge is a valuable widening of perspective.”

Last year, 19 girls took up places at prestigious universities in the states, including Princeton, Yale and Harvard, and a similar figure is expected for this year’s leavers.
Building relationships with American university admissions staff is high on the agenda for the college’s Professional Guidance Centre.

Staff recently visited the Boston area to make contact with popular east coast institutions.

Miss Buckingham added: “The opportunities available to our US candidates are wonderful and appeal to our students who have benefitted from a broad education and enrichment of extra-curricular activities.

“Receiving cheery emails from the two students who attended Princeton for Liberal Arts Studies this freshman year has confirmed what a stimulating prospect America represents.

“American applicants are usually tenacious sorts who know how to market themselves and are keen for adventure, so it’s no wonder they are never in short supply here at College.”

Pupils from other schools across Gloucestershire have been invited to attend.

Dean Rapelye’s talk, which has been arranged by the Princeton Alumni Schools Committee of the UK, will take place in the Council Room from 5.30-6.30pm.
