Prior's_Field_Stella_RimingtonExceptional speakers come to Prior’s Field as part of its tradition of annual lectures given in memory of the school’s founder. This year, on Thursday 21 November, the first female Director General of MI5 and first Director to have their name publicised, Dame Stella Rimington, will deliver a lecture entitled Open Secret: The Life and Career of the First Woman to Lead MI5.

Tickets to hear Dame Stella’s lecture are open to the general public and can be booked online at priorsfieldschool.com, subject to availability. Drinks are on arrival from 7pm, with the lecture starting at 7.30pm.

On average over 50% of girls at Prior’s Field study degree subjects in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). This October Prior’s Field is hosting a STEM Conference for its Fourth and Fifth Year pupils and those at Fullbrook School. The day will start with girls working in groups to design and construct solutions to such engineering challenges as how to survive on a desert island, rescue passengers from a train derailment and crash-proof test an egg-laden car.

Students will then hear from visiting speakers Dr Anil de Sequeira of Bath Spa University, who will talk about the food we eat and our responsibility to learn more about it, and Kate Bellingham, engineer and past Tomorrow’s World presenter, who is an ambassador for the government’s campaign Science [So What? So Everything]. The conference will close with a career ‘speed dating’ session where pupils will have a matter of minutes to quiz visiting parents and Prior’s Field Old Girls working in the STEM field to identify their specific jobs.
