Today’s A Level results from Queen Margaret’s prove that girls at the School are aiming high and exceeding expectations across a breadth of subjects, whatever their interests and talents may be.
At a time when top universities are focussing on the importance of traditional core subjects, the all girls’ School near York has achieved particularly excellent results in Mathematics and English. With over a third of QM’s A Level students taking Mathematics this year, the School is celebrating after 50% of them achieved A* – A grades. Impressively, three girls achieved 100% in at least one of their Mathematics papers, proving that the School is breaking through the tiresome stereotyping which can limit girls’ aspirations.
English results were a highlight for the School with 50% of the girls taking English Literature securing an A*. These results will see some of the School’s most talented writers, including Isabella Sharp who was recently shortlisted in the Tower Poetry Competition, go on to study the subject at a number of the prestigious Russell Group universities; several of our girls have secured places at the University of Durham.
Queen Margaret’s prides itself on enabling girls to pursue their passions. Testament to this are the Art results with 100% A* – A grades in Fine Art. Art plays an important role at QM: girls regularly stage external exhibitions, work with professional artists and join prestigious Art schools. Matilda Laird is one such girl, who achieved A* in Fine Art alongside As in English Language and Philosophy and Ethics, and she will go on to study an Art Foundation course at the long established and nationally respected Leeds College of Art.

The School may be forward thinking in its approach to girls’ education but still holds on to many traditions. As well as their A Level results, the Upper Sixth leavers each receive their ‘QM Red Ribbon’, a long standing tradition where red ribbons are given to girls upon completion of their time at the School.
