On Friday 8th February, all students and staff at Queen's College – from the Nursery to the Sixth Form – took part in queens college charity fun runa fun run in aid of a clinic for malnourished children in the village of Marakissa, The Gambia.

Although much of the sponsorship money is still pouring in, by the time totals are counted, the fun run will have raised around £8000 to reach the £14000 total target for the clinic.

The older pupils and staff ran a distance of 5000 metres for the cause, with the younger pupils running and walking shorter, more appropriate, distances.

Despite getting a little muddy, the runners took part in high spirits – some attempted a 5k three-legged race and others ran whilst wearing various forms of fancy dress!

Queen's College has visited the village of Marakissa for a number of years and felt strongly that the children's clinic, which had closed due to lack of funds, should be the next charity fundraising project. The school is pleased to announce that, thanks to the fun run and other fundraising efforts, work has now started on the refurbishment of this Queens college charity fun runclinic.

Pupils from Queen's College will visit the clinic once again during the Easter holidays this year to get stuck in to the project and hopefully witness the official opening.

Run by the Methodist Church, the clinic will care for malnourished children and their families.

Part of the work will be remedial, but an even larger part will be preventative and education will form a significant element.

The clinic will also keep chickens and have a fruit farm as well as ground crops to emphasise the need for a balanced diet.
