Queen’s College Student Laura wins with Wessex Leopards

Skilled Queen’s College Year 11 hockey player, Laura Fry, recently competed in the 2012 England Hockey Queens cOLLEGE hOCKEYFutures Cup, held at Cannock Hockey Club. 

The Futures Cup aims to give talented players in the U16 and U18 age groups first-hand experience of an international tournament environment, in preparation for potential future involvement in a National Age Group Squad. Laura was selected for the U16 Wessex Leopards girls team, so took part in this round robin competition which ran from 1st – 4th November.

Laura and her team were up against gifted girls from all over the country and the Wessex Leopards performed extremely well. In their first match, the Wessex Leopards won 3-1 against the Pennine Pumas.

The girls were 1-0 down in the first half, but Laura scored the equaliser in the 44th minute to bring the Leopards back to the game. In the second match, the team won 1-0 against Mercia Lynx and in the final game against the Saxon Tigers, Laura’s Leopards won by a clear 3 goals to nil.

By winning all three round robin matches, the Wessex Leopards were victorious winners of the Futures Cup.

Being part of the Wessex Leopards team for this competition has given Laura the fantastic experience of playing among the top hockey players in her age group in the country and will undoubtedly improve her game, giving her the best chance of possible high-level selection in the future.
