Queen's_College_young_chefQueen’s College pupil, Katie Bushill, has won the District Final of the RIBI (Rotary International in Britain and Ireland) Young Chef Competition.

Katie, who also was crowned the winner of the local heats in Taunton, competed against 10 other schools.  She was tasked to prepare in two hours, a three course healthy meal (starter, main and dessert) for two people costing less than £15.  Katie had to take into account food presentation skills, food hygiene, organisation and planning and was judged on her ability to cope in a demanding situation.

The RIBI Young Chef Competition aims to encourage and develop creativity in young people and to help develop life skills.  Designed for pupils aged 11-17 years, thousands of youngsters from all over Great Britain and Ireland take part.  Katie will next go forward to the Regional Finals, which are being held in Redruth on 29 March 2014 and the final eight will be entered into the National Final.

Said Headmaster, Chris Alcock:  “The standard at the district final was exceptionally high and to be announced as the winner is a huge honour.   We are so proud of Katie who has blossomed here at Queen’s College and has found a real passion in life.  Our students can study Food Technology at GCSE and Home Economics (Food, Nutrition and Health) at A Level.  In addition, we teach all our pupils to cook so that when they go onto university or their careers they have one of the most important life skills already in place.”
