Queen’s College has been ranked second in the South West and 17th nationally for sport by School Sport Magazine.

The leading sports magazine, which analysed hundreds of schools and has published the top 30 sports schools in the UK in this month’s issue, ranked the schools on their competitive achievement in a range of sports throughout the year with points scored for reaching the later stages of national competitions.  Over 20 sports were analysed and over 120 different national competitions.  More weighting was given to success in a range of sports rather than single sports, and those sports with more schools competing – all inputted into a special computer programme.

Queen’s College has had tremendous success in sport over the past few years with five teams reaching the national finals in hockey as well as national individual placings in swimming, riding, cross country, athletics, biathlon and tetrathlon.

Coaching is a key component of the pupils sporting success.  The department has ten sports specialists including Olympic hockey athlete, Ian Haley, national cricketer, Arul Suppiah and Wayne Sprangle who retired from Plymouth Albion this year.

Said Queen’s College Headmaster, Chris Alcock:  “This accolade reflects our competitive achievement in a range of sports and honours schools from all over the UK which take competition seriously.  We are fortunate to have tremendous sporting facilities here at Queen’s and the coaching that our staff provides is second to none.  The contribution our pupils make in sport is highly valued.  Every Saturday, when fixtures are played, you will see many parents and pupils supporting their friends on the sidelines. It really is a family school.”
