Queen’s College senior cricketers will be hosting the Visually Impaired Somerset Cricket Team at the school on Tuesday 4 March 2014 at 5.30pm.  The event is being led by ex-Somerset County and Malaysian national cricketer, Arul Suppiah, who is currently Director of Cricket at Queen’s College.

Arul will be training the two sides in cricketing techniques and aims to give the visually impaired cricketers a real understanding of playing the game.  The Queen’s College side will be wearing simulation glasses, so that they can feel what it is like to play with partial sight and a bell will be placed inside the bat to aid batting accuracy.  In addition, Arul will be talking to both teams about fielding, batting and bowling techniques and how to work as a team.

Said Arul Suppiah:  “We are delighted to host the Visually Impaired Somerset Cricket Team here at Queen’s College and are looking forward to a top quality match between the teams. Having watched the Para Olympics with the rest of the UK population, it constantly impresses me how people with disabilities master complex sports and compete to such a high level.  I have worked with this team before and seeing people with limited sight play an accurate and technical game such as cricket is truly remarkable.

“The pupils at Queen’s College will really benefit from the experience and the simulation glasses really help them understand how to use different techniques than those they are used to and will train them to listen intently.”

Anyone wishing to come and watch the match which commences at 5.45pm in the Queen’s College Sports Hall would be most welcome.  Please contact Arul Suppiah on avs@queenscollege.org.uk.
