During the Easter break 12 pupils experienced 4 days in the life of elite athletes at a partnership launch of two of Repton Schoolthe globe's leading performance companies.

Michael Johnson Performance, the company owned by four time Olympic Gold Medallist Michael Johnson, and Perform, the Healthcare provider for St George's Park, recently announced a series of Performance Camps in the UK. They opted to launch the partnership with a 4 day pilot camp and 12 of the 20 available places were offered to Repton pupils.

These two companies are very much leaders in their fields of athletic performance, and they offered the chance for our young sportsmen and women to experience the world class facilities of St George's Park, as well as the latest ideas in the delivery of athletic performance from the lead coaches at Michael Johnson Performance, and the highest level of sports science from Perform's Elite Physiotherapist.

The selected Reptonians underwent a lengthy process of performance testing, including tests of functional mobility, power, strength, reaction time and an orthopaedic screening.

Following this they took part in a number of sessions to improve their athleticism and technique with both linear and multi-directional running, as well as gym work and nutritional guidance.

This is such a major project that it featured on both Sky News and Sky Sports News, as well as on regional news Repton Schoolprogrammes.

One of the major highlights was, of course, the chance to meet Michael Johnson himself, and he was present at a number of sessions to offer his advice on their techniques.

He also gave an hour long lecture on goal setting, his experiences as a young professional athlete and how he coped with being the best in the world.

The pupils were not only able to experience the cutting edge of coaching athleticism, but also to be able to work with some of the leaders of their field, in what is now regarded as the UK's best sporting facility.

Repton's Director of Sport, Ian Pollock, said "This was a phenomenal opportunity for the youngsters involved and we were delighted to be approached by Perform to be part of this pilot camp.

It has empowered our pupils with a greater knowledge base to allow them to be more athletic for their sports, and given them a much deeper understanding of what is required physically to compete at the top level.

Hopefully it will make the difference for them as they aim to make the next step up in their sporting careers. The staff from MJP and Perform delivered sessions of the highest quality both on and off the field."

After the camp A Block pupil, Elliot Hibell (O), said “The whole experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We Repton Schoolfound out how our bodies worked and what they are capable of. I would love to be able to go back in the future to see how I have improved.

” Esme Burge (3G) added “Meeting Michael Johnson is an experience I will never forget. In a race against him he beat us all while he was only jogging but I guess losing to a 4 time Olympic gold medalist isn't something to be too ashamed of.”
