Rossall School pupil, George Weaver, 16, has become a GCSE ‘A-Lister’ with his performance in this year’s exams and now has his sights set on the Hollywood ‘A-List’ with a part in a new motion picture in the offing.
Budding actor and keen astronomer, George of Cleveleys, is a rising star in the classroom. With three A* and seven A grade passes to add to last year’s GCSE A* in astronomy, the sky’s the limit for the gifted pupil who also wants to become an actor. He’s ecstatic about his exam results, but could be on another high early next week when he learns if he’s been successful in landing a major role in a new film being made by British film funny man, Simon Pegg, of ‘Shaun of the Dead’ fame.
Only days before his GCSE triumph, George was in London auditioning to play the part of a young Martin Freeman (the actor known for his roles in The Office and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) in Pegg’s film, ‘The World’s End’ and next week gets to hear if his quest to become an ‘A-List’ star in Hollywood is a step closer. Commented George: “This week’s been really crazy. I’m not sure which is more exciting, the film potential or achieving A* and A’s in all subjects. For now, the GCSE results are a real buzz, because my dad’s bought me a season ticket for my favourite football team, Stoke City, for doing well in the exams. But by next week, if I’m lucky enough to get the film part, I think the excitement will be as good as this. Although, I think the Stoke City ticket will be hard to beat.”
If acting doesn’t work out for George he’s always got A* in sciences and maths to fall back on and perhaps a degree, followed by a career in astronomy.
Joining George in the ‘A-List’ hall of fame at Rossall is Scott Hughes, 16, of Rossall. With 10 A’s and one B grade he plans to study A-Levels at Rossall and try for a degree in medicine. He’s joined by Helen Tyler of Cleveleys with three A* grades, five A’s and two B’s who can sing for joy tomorrow when she joins the Rossall School choir to perform for the first time in Westminster Abbey. She said: “I thought I wouldn’t do as well, so I brought my dad into school for support when I collected my results, but I’m really chuffed and my dad’s offered to pay for a celebration later today.”
There were also A* grades and A’s for Josh Stone, 16, of Poulton, who gained top grades in tough subjects, Chemistry and Physics, plus an A grade in maths, in which he expected a B pass. He’s gained 10 GCSE’s in total and is doubly pleased, because his performance has bettered older brother, Daniel’s GCSE performance from his days at Rossall. However, hopes to follow in Daniel’s footsteps by taking A-levels at Rossall followed by a degree in medical science at Leeds University, so that he can fulfil his ambition to become a veterinary surgeon.
