New Headmaster to take the Royal Hospital School to the next stage of its development

The Governors of the Royal Hospital School, Suffolk, are delighted to announce the appointment of James Lockwood MA as Headmaster with effect from September 2012 in succession to Howard Blackett. James Lockwood joined the Royal Hospital School in September 2009 as Deputy Headmaster from a Senior Management position at St John’s School, Leatherhead.

Henry Strutt, Chairman of Governors, said, “We were assisted in our search for a new Headmaster by experienced recruitment consultants, Odgers Berndtson, and the Governors were pleased with the process and strong list of candidates put forward. After an exhaustive and highly competitive interview procedure, the unanimous decision of the Board was that James Lockwood would be the leader most able to continue to strengthen and develop the Royal Hospital School.”

James was educated at Woodhouse Grove School where he was Head of School and Captain of Rugby. Having completed an Honours degree in Manchester, he went on to gain an MA in Education Management at the University of Surrey. James started his teaching career at Exeter School where he was a Deputy Housemaster and Master i/c Cricket. He spent ten years at St John’s School, Leatherhead, during which time he led an academic department, was Housemaster of a boys’ boarding house, Master i/c Rugby and, latterly, a member of the School’s Senior Management Team, with specific responsibility for the co-curricular life of the School. James is married to Sarah and has two young children: Olivia who is four and Harry who is two.

James Lockwood said, "It is an absolute honour and privilege to be appointed to lead such an outstanding school and I look forward to the challenges ahead at RHS, particularly at this very exciting stage of the School’s development."

On behalf of the Board of Governors, Henry Strutt added, “We are delighted to be able to appoint someone with James’ experience and enthusiasm. We are absolutely confident that he will provide a clear vision for this unique and progressive School and, through his outstanding leadership skills, will carry the whole school community with him.”

The Royal Hospital School is a co-educational full boarding and day school for 11-18 year olds situated in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside on the banks of the river Stour.
