Two Rydal Penrhos pupils have recently been offered places on Foundation Courses to pursue their love of art.
Local girl, Ellen Carnegie Wuster has recently secured a place on a Foundation Course at Coleg Menai following a Rydal Penrhosvery successful portfolio-based interview.

She has chosen this course both for its reputation and its location, close to home and still in the heart of Wales.

A large part of Ellen’s work has been influenced by Welsh culture and artists, and her extended essay was titled ‘Which Welsh artist, Peter Prendergast or Katherine Williams, captures the essence of Welsh Art’.

Ellen has been heavily influenced by Alberto Giacometti, and as well as painting and drawing has done a lot of work in sculpture. She would like to follow her Foundation with a degree potentially at UWE in Bristol in Art although she is unsure which discipline at present.

Fellow classmate Clara Meyer has also been successful in securing a place at Loughborough University to do a Foundation Course.

At present Clara is completing her studies in the International Baccalaureate, including higher level Art, and is considering a degree and career in product design.

Clara chose Loughborough as it has a great reputation for its foundation course as well as a specific degree course in product design.

Clara enjoys maths and business as well as being creative and this is why she is leaning towards the field of product Rydal Penrhosdesign as opposed to Fine Art. Clara likes design to be both beautiful and practical and is a big fan of Apple products for this reason. Her extended essay was written on the topic ‘Can Art can be considered design’.

Rydal Penrhos School recognises that creative expression has a significant place in a well-rounded education, reaching far beyond the curriculum and becoming, for many, a lifelong passion.

Clara and Ellen are just two of many pupils who have embraced this ethos and have learnt an array of skills and processes across the creative disciplines, taking advantage of the excellent facilities provided by the school’s Art department.
