Pupils Rydal Penrhos School have achieved a record-breaking set of GCSE results.
As grades were published across the country on Thursday, August 23, the school announced that 33.9 per cent of all grades were A* (9 and 8), which is their highest on record and significantly higher than the national average of 23.3%.
A total of 51.1 per cent of all final marks were A*- A (9-7); the second highest ever percentage at the school, and 28 of all entries scored a nine in accordance with the new grading system.
The number of pupils that achieved A*-C (9-4) grades was 94.4 per cent across the 15 subjects offered at GCSE in addition to the three sciences, English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics.
This follows on from Rydal Penrhos’ record-breaking A-level results, announced last week, rounding off a superb year of academic achievement from examination candidates.
Headmaster Simon Smith, said: “As I said last week such a set of results is a great credit to the pupils embracing our “5Ls” philosophy.
“It shows that whilst we must focus on Learning, in all its guises, all the other Ls, sport, the arts and an outstanding pastoral support (including the transformative impact of boarding as a lifestyle choice not a geographical necessity) can have a dramatic effect too. This year group were, for example, also U16 National Hockey Champions”

“We look forward to welcoming them to our Sixth Form, where we are proud to offer a total of 21 subjects at A-level or equivalent.”
Among the individual successes was Ioan Peake-Jones, who was rewarded for his exceptional application throughout his studies with seven A*s, two 9’s, an 8, a 7 and a distinction in Additional Mathematics.
Another standout pupil was Millie Collins, who secured six A*s, four 8 marks and a distinction in Additional Mathematics, with Edward Patrick attaining six A*s, three 9’s and a distinction.
Others to achieve outstanding grades were Abhishek Bathula (5A*, Two 9’s, Two 7’s, Distinction), Tallulah Batley (4A*, Two 9s, Two 7s, Distinction), Eddie Farrell (5A*, Two 8s, A), Barooj Maqsood (4A, Three 9s, 8, 7), Jamie Lavery (5A*, 8, 7, Distinction), Arend Franssens (5A*, A, 8, Distinction) and Holly Battersby (4A*, A, Two 7s, Distinction).
