Rydal Penrhos School has recently had a three-day inspection from the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Rydal PenrhosWales, who came to look at every aspect of boarding life in the school.

The inspection covers four major themes: quality of life, quality of staffing, quality of leadership and management and quality of environment.

The inspectors visited all areas of the school, talked to staff and pupils, looked at documentation, observed daily life in the school and asked a wide range of people to complete questionnaires.

The school has five boarding houses, four for boys and one for girls, with around 140 boarding places overall. Since the last inspection in 2010, the school was commended for refurbishing the boarding houses, for the increased range of activities on offer to boarders, and for its improved WiFi provision.

In particular the school was praised for its extra-curricular programme that encourages all pupils (day and boarding) to try out new activities, for its peer mentoring scheme that encourages older pupils to take responsibility for and monitor the welfare of younger pupils, and for the commitment shown to obtaining feedback from pupils on the quality of care and education they receive.

The inspectors also remarked on the high quality of staff in the boarding houses, and the family atmosphere that they help to create within the houses.

Mr Patrick Lee-Browne, Headmaster at Rydal Penrhos, said “Boarding remains at the heart of the school. This inspection report illustrates that we provide excellent care for our boarders, and that they are very well-provided for both mentally and physically.

We have a highly experienced group of staff responsible for the boarding houses, and I am very grateful to them for the support and encouragement that they give the boarders in their care.”
