A Rydal Penrhos Sixth former is heading for the seat of Government next week as she embarks on an exciting week of work experience at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.
Upper Sixth pupil, Hannah Patrick, will be travelling to London to spend four days immersed in governmental and constituency business where she will be shadowing Mr David Jones, MP for Clwyd West, and Ms Carys Taylor, his senior secretary.
Initially, Hannah wrote to Mr Jones to ask about the possibility of work experience within the constituency but she also took the initiative to speak with him in person when he attended the Rydal Penrhos Speech Day in May. As a result of the good impression she made, Hannah secured a tremendous opportunity to gain high quality and high profile work experience by travelling to London for a placement in Parliament itself.
Keen to ensure that Hannah receives an all-round view of the work that takes place in Parliament, the constituency office have arranged a hugely exciting week of activities for her, including the chance to tour the Houses of Parliament, see debates in both the Lords and the Commons, watch Select Committees, deal with enquiries and campaigns from the constituency alongside Mr Jones, and draft either a report or press release on parliamentary business. All being well, she will also have the amazing opportunity to attend Prime Minister’s Questions, arguably the most dramatic of the week’s Parliamentary sessions.
“I am so excited about my week in Parliament.” Hannah said, “Because of the way that their business is conducted, I won’t know exactly what issues I’ll be dealing with so it’s going to be a real adventure and am quite overwhelmed that very soon I could be sitting in the House of Commons during PMQs. Mr Jones and his staff have been so helpful and I’m very grateful for the opportunity as I know that this is going to be really beneficial for my career.”
