The first half of the spring term has seen pupils in Years 5 & 6 learning about robotics as part of their ICT Rydal Penrhos lego roboticsclasses.

Petko and Ethan (Year 6) programming their Lego to tap out a beat Using ‘Lego WeDo’ software, the pupils have been busy building robots and programming them to move!

To learn more about robotics and to move their projects forward, Mr McLeod, Head of ICT, invited Derek Edwards, an expert in the field of robotics, to showcase Lego Mindstorm robots.

Mr Edwards, showed the pupils a robot with a touch sensor that changed direction when it came into contact with an object, a ‘Segway’ robot which used tilt sensors to remain upright and move around, and impressively a robot which could solve a rubik’s cube.

Following the lesson, Mr McLeod commented, “This was a fabulous demonstration of the possibilities ahead and the pupils were inspired by what they saw and heard.

Having put the Lego WeDo software to great use this term, the pupils have quickly become accustomed to creating controlling programs for use in robotics and the Lego Mindstorm kit could prove to be the next logical step in developing these skills further.”
