Rydal Penrhos fivesRydal Penrhos reopened its refurbished Fives courts on Sunday 16 September 2012.

The courts were officially opened by Richard Black, the Chairman of the Eton Fives Charitable Trust with many current and former pupils attending the ceremony and taking to the courts for a few games.

Rydal Penrhos has a long history of Fives, with the first courts being built at the school in 1935. Two further courts were built after the war and the school enjoyed a long and successful schedule of fixtures throughout the years.

The game was revived in 2009 by Head of Games & PE, Mike Leach and all new pupils to Rydal Penrhos are given an introduction to the game and are encouraged to get involved. With the introduction of a GAP year student to coach the players, the Rydal Penrhos Fives team continues to go from strength to strength with regular games taking place against Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury and players now part in tournaments in Harrow and the home of Fives, Eton.

Patrick Lee-Browne, Headmaster is very keen to provide the opportunity to learn to play or revive old skills learnt many years ago to anyone in the area who would like to do so. “These are the only Eton Fives courts in Wales, and now that we have re-established the game within the School, and have a body of players of a good standard, we will include the courts as part of our partnership planning and our commitment to the community, so that members of the public can also benefit from the facility.”
