A team of budding chemists at Rydal Penrhos School are celebrating after winning the regional heats of a prestigious Rydal Penrhose chemistrynational competition.

The Top of the Bench competition is run by the Royal Society of Chemistry for 14-16 year old students, and begins with heats run by RSC Local Sections to decide a team for the UK final.

Four pupils from each school form a team to take part in the competition, two from Year 9, one from Year 10 and one from Year 11.

Jack Sissons, (Year 9) Amelia Perring, (Year 9) Anjalina Mitra (Year 10) and John Marston (Year 11) were selected to form the Rydal Penrhos team and travelled to Bangor University to take part in the competition.

Mr Pender, Head of Chemistry at Rydal Penrhos School praised the team following the competition, saying, “They were a credit to the school”.

The team will now travel to Loughborough in March to take part in the final of the competition which will require the team to complete a short test of factual chemical knowledge and a practical chemical problem solving team exercise.
