Seven pupils from Rydal Penrhos visited Ysgol Glan Morfa recently, to take part in the school’s assembly. The Rydal Penrhos purpose of the visit was to deliver the Urdd Message of Peace and Goodwill.

The Headmaster of Ysgol Glan Morfa, Mr Hugh Rhys Williams, invited the Rydal Penrhos pupils because he knows that it is a multicultural, multilingual school and he wanted his pupils to hear the message spoken in different languages by native speakers.

This year the Urdd’s Message of Peace and Goodwill is 91 years old, and since 1922 the message has been an inspiration for the humanitarian and international work of the Urdd.

The message was broadcast for the first time on the BBC World Service in 1924 and today it appears in many different languages on the internet and reaches all corners of the world.

In the 1950s the Urdd was given the responsibility of announcing the Message of Peace and Goodwill on 18 May, which was the date of the first peace conference in the Hague in 1899.

This year’s message was as follows was spoken in their native languages by each of the following Rydal Penrhos pupils:

Jessie Cheng – Hong Kong Chinese
Sebastian Abend – Spanish
Bernardas Subkovas – Lithuanian
Pavlo Grytsenko – Ukranian & Russian
Nicholas Fiorita – Italian
Gabby Towler – Syrian
Zhanna Gibradze – Georgian and Russian

“In unity there is strength.
As citizens each and every one of us has a responsibility to create and maintain a society that works in unison, and it is our duty to support our fellow-man and not turn a blind eye to the world’s problems.

From love comes humanity. Let us support communities locally, nationally and internationally to overcome dictatorship.

By doing so we can abolish selfishness, injustice and inequality. Through our love we must strive to break down all the barriers that corrupt and destroy our relationships with each other as nations of the world. Justice will not be achieved through dictatorship.

Let us reach out and work together to create a fairer and more righteous world. Fair trading between the countries is the way forward.

Giving and receiving: the generous person’s principle. So let us, the young people of Wales, encourage the young people of the world to create a global community.

We must all shoulder the responsibility and endeavour with love and patience to help each other, whilst doing so in a practical manner. In unity there is strength.”
