Trent College Music quartetA quartet of very talented young musicians from the School has earned a place in the prestigious National Children’s Orchestra.

Year 7 student Pia Rose Scattergood has been selected for the first time and will play the flute. Brothers Oscar and Francis Sinfield, who have played for the orchestra for a number of years, will play the trumpet and violin respectively. Finally, Jasper Severn has been selected for the third consecutive year and will play the cello in the renowned orchestra. All four are able to play multiple instruments and are at either Grade 7 or 8 in their individual instruments. In addition, each student plays for at least one of the School’s numerous orchestras and ensembles.

Acceptance into this much respected orchestra depends on a rigorous audition which musicians must repeat annually in order to keep their place. Membership of the orchestra brings with it numerous opportunities to play at concerts across the country. Players attend regional practice sessions at least once a month and take part in residential weekends twice a year.

Once the musicians have experienced the orchestra, they are able to move on still further; Oscar is now in his last year in the orchestra but his next step will be the City of Birmingham Youth Symphony Orchestra – once again a highly-regarded and well-established orchestra.

The School’s Director of Music, John Rayfield, is very impressed with the students’ selection: “This is a testament to the students’ hard work and talent. To join this particular orchestra is both an honour and a fantastic opportunity to improve playing skills and enjoy the benefits of excellent tuition and a range of performances.”
