Seaford College Prep School children dress up fAUTHOR and illustrator Gilliam McClure dropped in to Seaford College Preparatory School to meet children as part of World Book Day.

More than 60 children aged from seven to 11 – and a large number of the staff – came to school dressed as their favourite book characters and, needless to say, there was an abundance of Harry Potters, with all his assorted wizardry!

Other favourites were characters from the Roald Dalh books, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Wally, from ‘Where’s Wally?’ Books by David Walliams and Jacqueline Wilson also proved popular. There was a special parade during which the children told their audience of parents and teachers about their costumes and favourite books. During the day, they wrote book reviews, designed book covers and took part in a children’s literature quiz.

The highlight of the afternoon was the visit and workshop run by Gillian McClure, whose books, with their enchanting illustrations, include Selkie and the Little White Sprite. Her latest book Zoe’s Boat is due to be published by Plaister Press this month.

Year 5 teacher Sarah Lewis said: “Dressing up really brought the characters alive for the children who learned about all different aspects of literature, its inspiration, creation and illustration.”
