Shami Chakrabarti Visits Cheltenham Ladies’ College

The head of one of the UK’s leading pressure groups is set to give a talk at The Cheltenham Ladies’ CollegeCheltenham Ladies College Liberty Shami Chakrabarti next month.

Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, is due to give a lecture to CLC girls and pupils from across the town on November 7.

Ms Chakrabarti is a lawyer and has been in charge of the human rights and civil liberties group since 2003.
Her talk will take place in the afternoon at the Parabola Arts Centre.

College Principal Eve Jardine-Young said: “I’m delighted that Shami Chakrabarti has agreed to visit the College.

“She will receive a very warm and enthusiastic welcome from us all.

“Pressure groups like Liberty are an important element in democracy and it is important that young people have a good understanding of this aspect of society.

“This term we have hosted talks from Lee Durrell MBE and Rt Hon Vince Cable, and we greatly look forward to welcoming Shami.”

Ms Chakrabarti was called to the Bar in 1994 and worked as a lawyer in the Home Office from 1996 until 2001.
She has written, spoken and broadcast widely on the importance of the post-war human rights framework as an essential component of democratic society.

A regular on news bulletins and current affairs programmes, she has been described by The Times as the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years.
