An enthusiastic squad of 3rd and 4th Form pupils along with staff members Eleanor Bearpark and Mitch Kingsland Shebbear Collegehave been training hard for this year’s Ten Tors Challenge to be held on the weekend of 11th-12th May this year.

All of the training walks take place on Dartmoor, the first few focussing on navigational skills.

Gradually the lengths of the walks have increased and the demands of the day have also increased to include battling the changeable weather conditions and careful route planning, avoiding turbulent river crossings and marshy bogs, challenges that have caused some excitement.

One recent training walk was particularly gruelling, growing cold and rainy after a fairly pleasant start, but the squad were proud to arrive at the rendezvous point earlier than expected, to be rewarded with warming hot chocolate drinks.

There are times during the training when they all wonder why they are doing it, but all agree later that the satisfaction of achieving their goal makes it all worthwhile.

The team members all appreciate that sometimes they need to put themselves through tough times in order to experience the satisfaction of success.

We wish the whole team every success and we are sure they will maintain the impressive record set by Shebbear College teams in previous years.
