Setting off from Shebbear very early in the morning, a group of 6th Form pupils recently took a very exciting day Shebbear College Rugby Triptrip to watch an Oxford v Cambridge Varsity Rugby match at Twickenham.

A report written by pupils Sarah Penny, Hope Brown and Alice Cowan-Dickie described their experience …
‘As we neared Twickenham you could really feel the excitement in the minibus. Once arriving at Twickenham it was clear that it was going to be a good match.

We watched 20 minutes of the Oxbridge Under 21’s play, and then at 2.00pm the 2012 Varsity match kicked off with a bang.

Cambridge was the first to score with two penalties being scored within the first 7 minutes. Another penalty was scored soon after and Oxford had to make a substitution as their Captain, John Carter, had to leave the pitch with a knee injury.

With Gus Jones the replacement, Oxford managed to claw back some points, whilst Cambridge’s Robert Stephen successfully converted a try resulting with a score of 19-6 at the end of the first half.

Oxford’s first try in the second half went unconverted but was soon followed by another try, bringing the score up to 19-16.

The last points of the match were awarded to Oxford, who scored yet another try with their fly-half scoring the conversion. Finally, Oxford scored a penalty leaving the final score at 26-19 to Oxford, resulting in another victory for the three times Varsity Champions.’
