Moreton Hall School Astonomy‘Moreton was one of six European schools to each be awarded an EU grant of 25,000 Euros last year via the British Council,’ explains Head of Science, Richard Singleton. ‘The grant will allow the students to work on a two year collaboration based around the observation of asteroids.’

As part of this project eight members of the Moreton Astronomy Club gathered around the computer in the physics laboratory on January 19th to actually take control of the INO (Ironbridge North Observatory) telescope in Arizona. The task: to take multiple images of a small asteroid, Bilkis. These observations will form a critical part of a scientific paper that the team of students, in collaboration with their five other European school partners, will be presenting in person at a major astronomy competition in Poland at the end of March.
The young astronomers will fly to Poland for five days to take part in the astronomy competition as well as other cultural and scientific activities. They will be working with over 30 other European students of their own age on a genuine scientific project that will give them a real opportunity to extend their academic and personal horizons. All of the expenses of the trip are met by the European Community grant that Moreton Hall received last year.
