Queenswood girls are celebrating their successes at the recently held Hertfordshire Fencing Association Junior County Championships.

Champions Nicole & NatashaAbout 50 fencers of all levels of experience from across the county converged on the De Havilland Sports Village at the University of Hertfordshire to compete in their age category: Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 20.

Out of the six Queenswood competitors, two sets of Queenswood sisters fenced – including two defending champions – and all of them gained medals on the day.

The Rajan sisters, Nicole and Natasha, were the highlights of the competition, not only regaining their titles as County Champions but doing so with ease and style.

Seventeen-year-old Nicole Rajan (existing Girls County Champion) used her speed and agility to win all her bouts – including those against boys – to retain the U20 title. Natasha Rajan, aged 12, faced the most competition in defending her U12 title. The Rajan family had an additional reason to celebrate at the competition as Daniel Rajan won the U16 boys title: all three children were champions! Nicole competes mostly in adult classes now and has a busy season ahead.

The full results were:

  • Under 12 Champion – Natasha Rajan
  • County Under 16 Bronze medal – Andrea Ball
  • County Under 20 Champion – Nicole Rajan
  • County Under 20 Silver medal – Sarah Garrison
  • County Under 20 Bronze medal (joint) – Daniella Ball and Phylis Liu

The fencing club is a relatively new activity at Queenswood and is run by Mr Paul Davis, who founded the Paul Davis Fencing Academy in 2009, which operates in Hertfordshire. In congratulating the girls, Paul said: ‘Everyone has trained very hard and these are marvellous results in a tough competition. I am hopeful that the girls will do well in the future, doing credit to themselves, the sport, school and county.’
