St Lawrence College pupils enjoy a safe learning environment

A multi million pound development is underway at St Lawrence College to build a new state-of-the art theatre and to St Lawrence safe learningconvert Taylor Hall the old theatre) into a new girls’ boarding house.

Due for completion this summer, the project is on time and onbudget.

These impressive new facilities will be available for the start of the new academic year and come just two years after completion ofthe two-storey Sports Hall. Bursar Jim Connelly said: “The new theatre building promises to open a new chapter in the story of drama at the college." 

The 500-seat complex will provide a combination of teaching, performance, assembly and function space with an innovative design that takes full advantage of the theatre’s positioning at the heart of the College Campus, overlooking the Green and the College Chapel.

The new girls’ boarding house will provide up to 60 girls with modern, well-appointed en-suite accommodation. The new building will retain the best features of the old school assembly hall, while introducing modern design technologies to optimise the use of light and space in the building.

The new three-storey building will provide a bright, modern and secure environment for the girls.” Bellerby boarders are excited by the project and are looking forward to ‘moving over the road’.

Lucy Buckingham, 16, said the girls had been consulted about the fixtures and fittings. “We have been asked for our opinions on the colour of paint for our rooms, notice boards, layout, so we’re pretty excited. We’re also able to request who sleeps next door!

Demi Amos-Oluwole, 15, said: “I’m looking forward to a bigger room with an en-suite bathroom.” Pabita Thapa, 17, concurs.

She is also looking forward to an ensuite but as a member of the Upper Sixth next year, she will also get a single room. Pratima Rai, 18, added: “The new location will be great; more central to the heart of the college community.” Headmaster Rev.

Mark Aitken, said: “St Lawrence College is not a ‘stand still’ school; we are continuously developing to provide our children with the modern facilities, technologies and education of tomorrow.”

Continuous investment and development is imbedded into the school’s development plans, ensuring that the college is enhancing life and learning for its pupils of today and tomorrow.

Discussions are already taking place about the next phase of refurbishments. St Lawrence College is looking at improving its science and DT provision within the Senior School and redeveloping the library to introduce additional virtual learning and IT resources.
