On Thursday 22nd November, Kirby pupils were lucky enough to spend the majority of the day in the brand new St Lawrence Swenny Toddtheatre developing ideas for a workshop performance to friends and family after school.

They were joined by Peter White, leading Musical Theatre Director, who helped them to put their ideas together.

The performance told the story of Sweeny Todd the barber, who sent his wealthy customers through the trap door to his cellar where he "polished 'em off" with his cut-throat razor.

The songs were sung by different groups of pupils, with the girls playing the role of Mrs Lovett, the pie shop owner, and the love-sick Joanna. The boys played the roles of Sweeny Todd, Tobias Ragg, his new apprentice, and Joanna's sailor fiancé Mark.

After a slightly hesitant start, by the end of the afternoon,

Peter had the whole of Kirby singing the final number, "A Happy Ending", confidently and enthusiastically – a great sound!

Pupils worked hard throughout the day to create a performance using simple
choreography, props and costume as well as narration and singing.

For many pupils it will have been their first experience of performing on a stage and Ms Barrs and Mrs van der Byl were really impressed with the energy and enthusiasm which came across in the workshop performance.
