A Year 9 pupil at St Leonards-Mayfield School has beaten off competition from top History students from all over the country in the prestigious History of Parliament Schools Competition.

Anneka Wehnes, 14, whose entry into the national competition was judged as ‘outstanding’ and ‘showing precocious historical empathy’, is in her third year at the top girls’ school which is situated just south of Tunbridge Wells.

Anneka’s ‘Speech on King Charles I after his execution’ was judged by academics and the staff of the Parliament’s Education Service to be ‘a remarkable pice of work, which captured some of the intensity of religious feeling and commitment that must have been felt by the people at the time’.
