With the release of the latest A-Level results, St Leonards-Mayfield School has cemented its reputation as one of the UK’s leading schools when it comes to catering for the needs of students with a range of abilities and interests, from academic scholars to those girls who require a little more support and guidance in order to fulfil their potential. The School is celebrating an increase to 48% in the proportion of its results graded at A*/A, in a year when nationally the proportion of top marks has dropped for the first time in 20 years.
This year, Mayfield’s A-Level students have achieved the grades they require to take up their places at a wide range of universities, including Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bristol, Durham, Exeter, University College London, Liverpool and even the University of Vienna.
Jennifer Ko will join the University of Cambridge to study Politics, Psychology and Sociology, having achieved an A* in Psychology and As in Economics, Geography and Chinese. The social sciences and humanities are strongly represented in this year’s degree choices. Alice Saldanha secured three A*s in English, Classics and Religious Studies, which assured her place at the University of Bristol to study English, and Elizabeth Cardozo, who achieved A*s in Economics and Geography and an A in Maths, has a place to study Geography at the same prestigious university. Zrinka Vitkovic will use her three A*s and one A to take up a place on the Psychology course at the university in Vienna, birthplace of modern psychology.
Medicine has once again proved to be a popular degree choice amongst Mayfield’s students. Thea Williams (three A*s in Maths, Biology and Chemistry) and Camilla Hickish (three As, also in Maths, Biology and Chemistry) will both join the Medicine degree course at the University of Bristol. Nicole Lam (four A*s in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology) has secured her place on the Medical Sciences degree course at the University of Edinburgh and Eleanor Reynolds (one A* and two As in Maths, Biology and Chemistry) will study Medicine at the University of Liverpool. Sophie Grant (three As in Biology, Chemistry and Geography) will be turning her attention to medicine of a different kind on the Veterinary Science course at the University of Bristol.

Many schools talk loosely about offering an ‘added-value’ education to their students; that is, supporting their students to achieve better grades than might be expected based solely on their underlying ability. In Mayfield’s case, our added-value has been independently measured and places the School in the top 10% of independent secondary schools in the country, and the top 5% of all schools. The girls’ results today are not only testament to their own commitment, but to the hard work and support of our staff.”
