St Mary's Cambridge GCSE resultsSt Mary’s School, Cambridge is delighted to announce that 39% of GCSE and IGCSE grades were today awarded at A* meaning that the school’s A* pass rate is up 4% from that in 2012 and 11% from 2011. Four girls were awarded 11 straight A* grades and six others were awarded 10 A*.

A further 27% of results were awarded at A grade with nearly two-third (66.2%) of all results being awarded A* or A grades. Nearly one in three students received nine or more A* and A grades.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress and member of the Girls’ School Association, explained: “These excellent results build on the success of the A-level results announced last week and we are delighted that our A* results are our best ever. Given our wide ability intake at all levels of the school, I am equally delighted that 40% of students received 8 or more A* and A grades and that 98% of results were awarded at A* to C grade.

“These results show how St Mary’s supports girls as individuals, including those for whom academic study is more of a challenge as well as academic high flyers. I am delighted that so many of our girls have achieved so well and congratulate each of them on their personal success.

“As the only all-through girls’ school in Cambridge, our reputation in science and mathematics remains assured. Almost 60% of our Physics results gained an A* as did 55% of girls taking Statistics as an additional mathematics qualification. 84% of our Biology and Physics grades and 78% of our Chemistry grades were awarded at A* and A as were 54% of our Mathematics entries. In addition, a remarkable 86% of girls who took Mathematics a year early achieved an A* grade as did 59% of those taking Science a year early.

“We continue to buck national trends with our very positive language results. 50% of our girls achieved A* grades in German as did approximately a third in Spanish and French (34% and 32% respectively). Ancient and minority languages fared extremely strongly: all our Year 11 girls who took Chinese achieved an A* as did our students taking Greek, Latin, Italian, Arabic and Thai.

“I am equally delighted to confirm our reputation for producing excellent results across the range of subjects. Our humanities results were also equally remarkable; in the first year in which we embarked on the IGCSE course, a staggering 70% of our History grades were awarded A* grade and 94% were awarded A*to A grade. I am delighted that 88% and 81% of our Music and Art results respectively were awarded A* or A.”
