St Mary's School, Cambridge junior school aim to cycle 8000 milesSt Mary’s Junior School has set the challenge of cycling the 8000 mile route of the London 2012 Olympic torch – without leaving Cambridge.

Students, staff and even visitors will be asked to help cover the route being taken by the torch on a static bike in the School’s new home in Chaucer Road. Students will track their progress along the route on a large map of the UK and aim to cover the correct distance in order to greet the torch as it arrives in Cambridge.

Students began their challenge, joined by Sixth Form students who have agreed to help them cover this impressive mileage.

Deirdre O’Sullivan, Headmistress at St Mary’s Junior School, commented: “The lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games is a really exciting time for our girls, especially as it was announced in December that St Mary’s former deputy Head Girl, Fiona Sheppard, has been selected as one of the first London 2012 Olympic Torchbearers. This Olympic challenge will help to build the atmosphere in the School as the torch works its way towards Cambridge.

“We will be encouraging everyone at the School, including our visitors, to help us achieve the required number of miles. The journeys are already creating a buzz around the School and all the girls are keen to do their bit!”
