St Mary’s Calne girls celebrate outstanding A Level results

Girls at leading independent girls’ school St Mary’s Calne are celebrating following their excellent  A Level results, with 29% of all entries graded A*, 65% A*-A, and 90% A*-B.

The impressive results included 6 girls achieving A* grades in three subjects.  100% A*-A grades were achieved in Further Maths, Latin and Spanish, with 95% A*-A in History and 92% A*-A in Maths.  100% A* grades were also achieved in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) examinations.

Local girls who performed exceptionally well included former Head Girl, Sophie Nye, of Foxham, Wiltshire, who secured her place to read History at Jesus College, Oxford, with 3 A*s, gaining full marks in papers in each of her subjects – History, Economics and English. Jessica Fechner from Calne, Wiltshire, was awarded 3 As and an A* and will be reading Modern Languages at Oriel College, Oxford.  Eleanor Harrison from Great Somerford, Wiltshire, achieved 2 A*s in Biology and Geography and an A in Chemistry to secure her place at Newcastle University to read Medicine.  Lucy Rogers (who competes in British Dressage) from Winterbourne Bassett, Wiltshire, achieved 2 A*s and an A.

Some of the top performing girls came to St Mary’s on a Foundation Scholarship – offered to gifted and talented pupils from the state sector.  Emily Clarke from Purton Wiltshire – who last weekend was also captaining the U19 English B Lacrosse Team – achieved straight As in Chemistry, Maths and Physics to read Chemical Engineering at Loughborough and Rosemary Tian (from Malmesbury Wiltshire) was awarded 3 A*s in Biology, Chemistry and Maths to secure her place at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, to read Veterinary Medicine.

Other girls who achieved A*s in three subjects include Hannah Wu with A*s in Further Maths, Maths and Physics and an A in Economics, securing her place at Jesus College, Oxford to read Mathematics; Olivia Erwin with A*s in English, Geography and History who will be studying History at Durham, Emilia Flack with A*s in English, History and Maths, and Isabella Grive with A*s in English, History, Spanish and an A in French.  Notable achievements also include Suzannah Bradshaw, who secured her place to read History at Durham obtaining an A* with a very rare full marks across all four History papers at AS and A Level.

Identical twins, Ella and Lara Bavinton, received identical results! The twins were awarded identical grades in Maths, Biology and Chemistry.  Both will go to their first choice of university, Ella to read Medicinal Chemistry at Leeds and Lara to study Medical Biochemistry at Manchester.

Meanwhile, fellow St Mary’s Calne students have won places at other prestigious universities including Bristol, Edinburgh, Exeter, St Andrews and York to read subjects including Geography, History, Politics and Psychology.

Almost all the girls secured their places at their first choice universities.  Headmistress, Dr Felicia Kirk, commented “I am very proud of all the girls.  They have performed extremely well and we have seen some outstanding personal achievements across all subjects, including the Sciences – with many girls securing their first place of university to read STEM subjects.  I would like to wish all the girls the very best with their future studies and careers and look forward to hearing how they all progress.”
