Cambridge’s only all-through girls’ school celebrates excellent GCSE results

St Mary’s School, Cambridge is delighted to announce that 73.3% of GCSE grades were awarded this year at A* or A, with 34.3% being awarded at A* and a further 39% at A. More than a third of students celebrated receiving nine or more A* and A grades. Three girls were awarded 11 straight A* grades and two others were awarded a clean sweep of 10 A*.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress and member of the Girls’ School Association, explained: “These excellent results build on last year’s fantastic results and our excellent A-level results announced last week. We are delighted that our results are even stronger this year with 73.3% of GCSEs at A* and A grade. Given our wide ability intake at all levels of the school, these results are a true accolade to the work our girls put into their studies and the additional support and tuition offered by our dedicated teachers. Our results show that St Mary’s truly supports each girl as an individual, developing her own unique skills.

“The results were strong across the range of subjects. The Sciences continue to flourish at St Mary’s with 91% of our Biology grades, 85% of our Physics grades and 81% of our Chemistry grades being awarded A* to A. 73% of our Mathematics grades and 79% of our Statistics grades were also awarded at A* to A.

“Our results in creative subjects were impressive with 91% of our Music results, 83% of our Textiles results and 81% of our Art results awarded A* or A. Our humanities results were also equally impressive with 85% of our History grades awarded A*to A grade. Language results were strong with 76% of our French results and 74% of our Latin results at A* to A.

“As a school with Christian values, we expect to perform well in Religious Studies and this year we have exceeded expectations with 79% of our GCSE Religious Studies students achieving A* to A grades.”

Cambridge’s only all-girl Sixth Form achieves 65% per cent of A-level grades at A*-A

More than half of students at St Mary’s School, Cambridge are celebrating as they received three or more A*-A grades in their A-level results. 53% of students were awarded three or more A*-A grades with 42% gaining straight A*-A grades. 33% of the cohort were awarded two or more A* grades.

A* grades were awarded for 30% of the overall examination grades and a further 35% of the results were at A grade.

Charlotte Avery, Headmistress and member of the Girls’ Schools Association, explained: “I am overjoyed by our outstanding A-level results which build on last year’s fantastic results. We are delighted that our results are significantly stronger this year with 65% of A-levels at A* and A grade.

“As the only all-girls’ Sixth Form in Cambridge, we continue to buck national trends in both Mathematics and Sciences with 71% of our students achieving an A* in Mathematics and 50% achieving an A* in Further Mathematics. 93% of our students achieved A*/A in Chemistry, 88% in Physics and 75% in Biology. Our results prove time and again that girls can achieve highly in all subjects across the board and not just those that are traditionally dominated by females.

“Our students also excelled in creative subjects with 70% of our A-level Art and Design, Photography and Textiles students being awarded an A* grade.

“I am also thrilled that in the first year of offering the EPQ [Extended Project Qualification] at St Mary’s, all girls achieved the award with 92% of the grades being awarded A* to B.

“I am delighted also with particularly strong AS results in the humanities subjects in which 100% of all students achieved an A* to B grades (English Literature, History, Politics, Geography and Religious Studies).”
