The annual Product Design Awards took place at St Peter’s School on Monday. Pupils studying Design & Technology 
at GCSE and A level exhibited the products that they had created as part of their course.
Owen Turner, a graphic designer (United by Design, York) and David Turner, a product designer (Scruffy Dog Design, York) were invited to judge four awards at the event, with the commercial potential of the products being a key element in deciding the best products, as well as aesthetic and functionality.
Pupil Brogan Grant received the award for product innovation, creating a novelty light using acrylic and polypropylene. The judges saw great market potential in this idea.
Other awards went to Harriet Langford (Outstanding achievement) for her modular coat and shoe rack, and to Olivia Clark (Quality of Manufacture) for her Chanel inspired handbag. Peter Hiles, Will Shaw and and Max Gill also received awards for their projects.
David Turner, of Scruffy Dog Design, compared the products on display as being equal in standard to some of the best work seen at degree level.
Jon Whitehouse, Head of Design and Technology at St Peter’s said “It’s a privilege to have two inspiring professional designers to give their observations of our students’ work, and present the awards. The students really value their insight.”
