On Wednesday of this week Maxine Bailey-Harland, Millie Peacock, Amy Sergeant and Sam Kitson competed against 34  Polam Hallregional schools in the annual Physics Olympics Competition at St Peter’s School in York.

The students had to work as a team to complete a number of physics-related tasks, which included constructing a marble-run, building a Lego tower, as tall as possible, to support a box of eggs and making a catapult capable of throwing balls of different masses at a range of targets.

The event is designed to promote the fun of physics but the students were also introduced to some new and challenging physics ideas along the way.

Despite not winning the overall event the Polam team did outdo the other 34 teams in designing the fastest solar-powered catamaran and were awarded prizes.

This, together with the very substantial goodie bag they each received at the end of the event, made it a fantastic experience. Well done everyone!
