On 6th April two students from St Peter’s took part in the regional final of the Poetry by Heart competition at Acomb St Peters York Library.

The students had to learn two poems by heart chosen from a vast anthology of 140 poems provided by the organisers.

Jamie Fenton (U6) recited Kubla Khan by Samuel Coleridge and The Applicant by Sylvia Plath and Aaron Anthony Pillai chose Porphyria’s Lover by Robert Browning and Musee Des Beaux Arts by WH Auden (born just down the road from the school).

They competed against contestants from seven other schools in the region.

One of the judges was Craig Bradley, a local poet, who is also known as ‘That Poetry Bloke’ who warmed up the audience by sharing some of his latest poems and entertained the competitors with stories of his times as a traveling poet around schools.

Although Jamie and Aaron didn’t get through to the grand final they were praised for their articulate and flawless performances and were a real asset to the school.
