St Peters School York Mike Hurst ROCK STARThe rock star, producer, pantomime writer and music historian Mike Hurst dropped in to a York school today to give a brief talk covering 350 years of popular music.

Sixth Form pupils at St Peter’s School in Clifton were treated to the lecture, entitled the Music Makers: 350 Year of Pop Music, as part of the school’s lecture programme.

Mike Hurst has been a major player in the music industry for over 40 years, initially as an original member of the top British vocal group The Springfields (in which Dusty Springfield first came to prominence), then as a prolific producer.

As a producer, Mike achieved over fifty Top-40 singles with such major stars as Cat Stevens, Manfred Mann, The Move, Spencer Davies Group, Showaddywaddy, The Four Tops, Cilla Black, Shakin’ Stevens, and Belle & Sebastian.

Ben Fuller, Head of Government and Politics at the School and organiser of the Sixth Form lecture programme, said: “The talk was a fun and informative dive into the history of pop. Our students were surprised to find that much of today’s popular music has its roots in ideas decades or centuries old.

“Mike has worked with pop legends such as Dusty Springfield and Cat Stevens so is well placed to lecture on this topic.”
