St Swithun’s school success at national lacrosse championships

St Swithuns Lacrosse TeamSt. Swithun’s 1st and 2nd lacrosse teams played at the National Schools Lacrosse Championships at Hartlington Sports Ground near Heathrow last weekend.

The 1st team had big wins against Glenalmond, Walthamstow Hall, Haberdasher’s Monmouth and Westonbirt schools during Friday’s pool play placing them in division 1 for Saturday. After dominating their section with wins over North London Collegiate, Putney High, St. Paul’s and Walthamstow Hall the team played against St. Bart’s in the semi-final. It was an excellent match that went into over-time and St. Swithun’s pulled out a 2-1 win to get them to the final. The final was a tough match against Stowe School, Buckingham and the 1st team finished as national runners-up for division 1; an excellent result for St. Swithun’s. Special mention goes to Helena Pratt, 17, from Bognor Regis and Hebe Plummer, 18, from Hook for leading the squad to their success.

The U15A team played in their tournament earlier this week, finishing as runners-up in their section behind Guildford with wins against North London Collegiate, Casterton and Piper’s Corner. They met Queen Anne’s in the 1st round of the play-offs but were knocked out with a 1-3 defeat. This result places the team in the top 16 lacrosse teams in England.

The 2nds had big wins over St. Paul’s, Downe House, RGS Worcester and a draw against Queen Anne’s placing them in the championship division for Saturday’s play, where they had a tough draw against the eventual finalists.
