Last weekend St Swithun’s hosted the U15 and U14 Southwest lacrosse tournament incorporating 31 teams St Swithuns team winners lacrossfrom across the region.

The U14A team, wanting to go one better and beat their 2nd place in last year’s tournament, had an outstanding day and were deservedly crowned U14 champions.

With comfortable wins in the morning over Sherborne, St Bartholomew’s, Downe House and Rendcomb College, they were placed in a tough premiership division for the afternoon.

Undaunted, the team conceded only one goal throughout their nine games to claim the title. St Swithun’s player Molly McKenna, age 14 from Upton Grey, was player of the tournament.

St Swithun’s coach Steph Webb said “The girls were outstanding and it was particularly pleasing to hear coaches from other schools say how the St Swithun’s team were a cut above the rest”. The U14A team will now look forward to the national tournament at the beginning of March.

The U15 team were also placed in the premier division for the afternoon, having beaten St Bartholomew’s, St George’s, Haberdashers’ Monmouth and St Mary’s in the morning to win their section.

The team played strongly, beating St Mary’s and Malvern St James before drawing 3-3 with rivals Downe House. The loss of their final match against Queen Anne’s placed the U15 team 3rd overall in their age group. Again, St Swithun’s had the player of the tournament in Megan Bespolka, age 15 from Winchester.
