A St Swithun’s School student has been awarded a prestigious scholarship to study at Trinity College, Oxford.

Hongzhou Luan became eligible for the Jardine Scholarship when she applied to the college to read engineering science. She was selected following interviews in London and Hong Kong and spoke about her aspirations, inspirations and thoughts on current affairs. The scholarship will cover Hongzhou’s tuition and college fees as well as a sum for lodging and other expenses.

The foundation provides scholarships to outstanding applicants who are committed to improving the community and believed that Hongzhou fitted this mould. The aspiring bio-medical engineer currently studies physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and further mathematics and participates in various co-curricular activities.

Speaking about the process, Hongzhou said: “The whole interview experience was amazing. I learnt new skills and gained a lot of confidence for situations like this in the future. If, in the end, I hadn’t been awarded the scholarship, I would still have considered the experience incredibly worthwhile. I am so proud to have been selected.”

Headmistress Jane Gandee added: “Hongzhou is a conscientious and able student who works hard. But she is also a lively member of her boarding house and is involved in a broad range of co-curricular activities. She thoroughly deserves this award.”
