The performing arts hall at St Swithun’s School, Winchester was the venue for a choral concert featuring combined local choirs and music by composer Alexander L’Estrange on Sunday.
Featuring the massed voices of choirs from St Swithun’s senior and junior school, Orpheus (the St Swithun’s staff and parents’ choir), the Hampshire County Youth Choir and the Alresford Community Choir there were nearly 300 singers taking part in the performance.
Alexander L’Estrange’s Ahoy! piece was conducted by St Swithun’s director of music YiRu Hall and accompanied by the composer himself along with his Call Me Al Quintet. Performing to a capacity audience of 580, the choir sang familiar sea shanties and Tudor tunes to tell the story of the Mary Rose.
“They all performed with great energy and the sound created in the hall was electrifying – I am so thrilled with how it all came together with singers aged 9 to 90 enjoying making music together,” said YiRu Hall.
