A tennis team from St Swithun’s School, Winchester has been invited to attend the Winchester District Sports Awards 2014 dinner on 12 February, where it has been nominated for the Junior Team of the Year award.

In the senior Aegon tennis league last summer the St Swithun’s senior team achieved a place at the National tennis finals in Sheffield in July. However, some of the senior players were unable to attend the event so were joined by U15 players to play in the U18 competition week long final. Although they lost their four matches, with two only narrowly, as the youngest team at the event the experience was invaluable.

St Swithun’s School tennis coach Paul Boyd-Leslie said “The girls were amazing throughout the National finals week. They were a bit overwhelmed at first, especially meeting the eventual tournament winners in their first match. However, they then relaxed and improved each day. It was the first time in St Swithun’s School history we had won through 5 rounds to reach the national finals and hopefully it won’t be the last.”

The team members attending the award ceremony are Allegra Whittome, Emily Wickham, Lucy Upcraft and Georgina Witter.
